Margaret Brundage

1900–1976 · Fantasy

Queen of the pulp fantastic

The artist whose pastel covers gave Weird Tales some of the pulp era’s most recognizable visions of fantasy and horror.

Brundage produced dozens of covers during the magazine’s celebrated 1930s run.

Her theatrical scenes helped define the visual climate in which writers such as Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft reached readers.

Why the work endures

She was one of the first women to dominate the cover identity of a major speculative-fiction magazine.
