Mœbius

1938–2012 · Comics · Science Fiction

Infinite worlds drawn with a single line

The visionary French artist Jean Giraud, whose work as Mœbius opened science-fiction comics into dream, silence, architecture, and the surreal.

Giraud was already acclaimed for the western Blueberry when his Mœbius identity moved toward experimental science fiction.

With fellow artists he helped found Métal Hurlant in 1974. His clean line and strange, expansive landscapes influenced comics, animation, fashion, film design, and games worldwide.

Why the work endures

Mœbius proved that imagined worlds could be both precise and mysterious—fully designed yet open to interpretation.
